Tax-related Information

If you received payment from a US institution (Emory University, for example) during your stay at the US, you should receive in the mail at the beginning of the following year either a W-2 form or a Form 1099 that lists your total income (you will receive 2 separate forms if you received payment from 2 different institutions). When you receive your W-2 form or Form 1099, you need to file a tax return with the US Internal Revenue Service to claim federal taxes that were withheld from your paycheck in the previous year. Forms and detailed instructions are available online from the official IRS website: http://www.irs.gov. To download forms, please click on the section entitled "Forms & Pubs", and click on "Search for a form or publication" and search for Form 1040NR or 1040NR-EZ. Instructions on how to fill out those forms are at the same location. If you are eligible for claiming Tax Treaty Benefits, you need to search for Publication 901 "US Tax Treaties". If you need general instructions, please take a look at Publication 519, "US Tax Guide for Aliens".

To claim a refund for your State Income Tax in Georgia, where Emory Univiersity is located, you can access forms and instructions from the website of Georgia Department of Revenue Income Tax Division: http://www2.state.ga.us/departments/dor/inctax/. The form you will need is either Form 500 or Form 500EZ.

Good luck.
